A preposition is a word
such as on, from, with, in and for are used to link nouns and pronouns. The
words linked to prepositions are called objects.
Following figure shows the general use of prepositions in sentences .

Now we shall look in to more straightforward sentences to
understand the use of prepositions.
The cake with a cherry is mine
In this example, the preposition with is showing the relationship between the noun cherry and the noun cake. it tells us which cupcake is hers. Here, in this sentence we call the noun cake as the direct object and the noun cherry as the prepositional object.
We drove our car to the store
Here as above noun car is the direct object of the verb
drove. "To the grocery store" is
a prepositional phrase where, noun store is the prepositional object.
